BMW is increasing their commitment to hybrid vehicles. Following up the success and innovation of their i models, the company is looking to offer plug-in hybrids of all of their core-brand models, starting with the BMW 3 Series. The 3 Series plug-in hybrid prototype puts together a four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor. The internal combustion engine keeping up the more traditional part of the equation is based on the TwinPower Turbo engine, which has been voted “International Engine of the Year”—twice.

As you can see, the BMW brand's ambitions in the hybrid space are anything but tame. Herbert Diess, Member of the Board of Management BMW AG, Development, had this to say: “When it comes to the electrification of the drivetrain, we are deliberately developing a wide-ranging expertise in order to offer our customers worldwide the ideal solution.” Key to the brand's far-reaching goals is the development of a plug-in hybrid technology that is flexible and able to be incorporated into a wide variety of vehicles and vehicle concepts. In this way, BMW can hit the ground running, deploying the technology rapidly across its model range.

BMW is making similar efforts with the eDrive technologies and components that will be at the heart of their hybrid line. In the future, the goal is to have production organized around an intelligent eDrive component-sharing system. What does this mean? In short, that the same production line producing high-voltage battery modules for the BMW i8 will be utilized for the BMW X5 eDrive, and other BMW vehicles.

To realize their goals, BMW is aiming to strike a challenging balance between maximized electric drive time, dynamic BMW performance, everyday practicality, and maximum long-distance capability. Here at Fields BMW of Daytona near St. Augustine, FL, we know that BMW is more than up to the task, and we are excited to see what the future holds.
