BMW recently announced that, through their BMW i Ventures arm, they will be investing in Nauto, a Silicon Valley start-up company that employs cameras and artificial intelligence systems to learn more about the behavior of drivers. BMW is one of several companies who invested in Nauto.

Nauto is in the process of outfitting cars across the globe in more than 24 cities with in-vehicle camera and sensor hardware. This technology is connected to a smart network and a continuously learning cloud. Together, this system looks at the habits of individual drivers in order to establish patterns and learn more about how we all operate behind the wheel. By operating on such a wide scale, Nauto is able to gather information on how drivers behave in a variety of urban conditions. Some of the most vital data concerns the errors, distractions, and road-borne challenges that lead to collisions.

While Nauto currently operates by installing their technology in existing automobiles, their goal is to integrate their software directly into new production vehicles, and to look even more closely at road conditions outside of the car, in addition to their continuing work examining driver behavior.

As driver-assistance technologies become increasingly more prevalent, and companies like BMW pursue autonomous vehicles, the type of information that Nauto is collecting will prove vital to keeping drivers safe.
