The BMW brand's commitment to perfection extends to delivering class-leading safety. That commitment was recognized earlier this month by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when the organization bestowed their highest honor on the 2017 BMW 5 Series—Top Safety Pick +. The IIHS put the BMW 5 Series through its paces during the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints tests; that’s five crash tests all in all. In addition to exhibiting strong performance across all five tests, the 2017 BMW 5 Series was awarded a “Superior” rating for the optional front crash protection system, and a “Good” rating for headlight performance.

The IIHS praised the body and structure design of the BMW 5 Series, citing a boost in performance in the small overlap front crash test as a result of this design. The results showed a well-maintained driver space that indicated a low risk of any significant injuries in a real-life crash of the same severity. The available frontal Collision Warning system, with either City Collision Mitigation or Extended Collision Mitigation, was able to avoid collisions during testing at 12 mph and 25 mph.

The BMW brand most definitely outdid themselves. In addition to an emphasis on safety, the 2017 BMW 5 Series features a roomier interior than previous models, as well as enhanced efficiency. With an entirely new design, the 2017 BMW 5 Series is up to 137 pounds lighter than its predecessor. The state-of-the-art chassis features Dynamic Damper Control with Adaptive Mode and Integral Active Steering, the BMW intelligent all-wheel drive system, Advanced Driver Assistant Systems, and Parking Assistance Systems.
