We’ve all been there. The dreaded day when you get in your car, turn the key or push the button, and your car won’t start. Our BMW service professionals are here to teach you how to jump-start your car before bringing it into our service center for an inspection. The professionals at Fields BMW of Daytona are always ready to help you with repairs, maintenance, and service tips.

The Process of Jump-Starting

All you really need is a working car and a set of jumper cables. Once you have them, the first thing to do is ensure the vehicles are positioned where the batteries are easily within reach of each other, ideally nose-to-nose, but with space to work. Check that your battery terminals are free of corrosion. Then, follow these steps:

  1. Start the other vehicle’s engine
  2. Connect the red cable clamp to your battery's red (positive) terminal
  3. Connect the other red cable clamp to the red (positive) terminal of the booster vehicle’s battery
  4. Connect the black cable clamp to the black negative terminal of the other vehicle’s battery
  5. Connect the other black cable clamp to any non-painted metal surface of your vehicle; never attach it to the negative terminal on the dead battery, as it could create a combustible accident
  6. Start your vehicle and disconnect the cables in the reverse order
  7. Drive your car for at least 15 minutes to ensure it holds its charge
